Who Was Adam Weishaupt?

Weishaupt was a Bavarian academic whose short-lived order outlived him mainly as legend.

Biography of Adam Weishaupt—professor, Enlightenment thinker, and founder of the Bavarian Illuminati.

Academic background

Born in Ingolstadt in 1748, Weishaupt studied law and later taught at the University of Ingolstadt. His intellectual world was shaped by Catholic Bavaria and Enlightenment philosophy.

Founding the order

In 1776 he established the Illuminati as a structured secret society. Graded instruction and confidentiality were tools for what he presented as moral and civic improvement.

Exile and reputation

After the Bavarian suppressions he fled and eventually settled under protection in Gotha. Later writers cast him as either a reformer or a master conspirator—portraits that often say more about their authors than about archival nuance.
