Educational archive — not an official organization, membership portal, or recruitment site.

About this project
This website is an independent educational resource about the historical Bavarian Illuminati and modern claims associated with its name. It does not represent or recruit for a secret society.

Historical organization

The Bavarian Illuminati

A concise account of the Illuminatenorden of 1776–1785: origin, purpose, structure where documented, and dissolution.

What the historical organization was

The Bavarian Illuminati was a secret society founded in the Electorate of Bavaria. It is the primary historical referent behind most serious uses of the word “Illuminati” in academic writing.

When it was founded

The order was founded on 1 May 1776. Claims of vastly older secret continuity for this specific organization are not supported by its documentary record.

Where it originated

The founding center was Ingolstadt. Expansion later reached other German-speaking areas through personal and lodge-related networks.

Documented purpose

Surviving materials and scholarly syntheses describe aims tied to Enlightenment moral and intellectual formation, secrecy as an organizational method, and opposition to superstition and perceived abuses of religious and political authority.

Members and structure

Some members are identifiable in historical literature; complete membership totals remain debated because records are incomplete and later accounts are often polemical. The order used graded ranks and codenames. Exact ritual detail varies by source quality.

Suppression and dissolution

Government action in 1784–1785 ended organized activity in Bavaria. This site does not claim that the historical organization continues to operate today; continuous institutional survival has not been established by credible historical evidence.
